October 24 is World Polio Day. A polio survivor will dress the Hastings sheep in purple. Come and take a selfie of you with the sheep and send it on to the polio.org.nz facebook page.
Infantile Paralysis, or Poliomyelitis, was a devastating virus as it affecting children. New Zealand alone recorded around 10,000 cases, with over 800 deaths. Since the vaccine was available in the 60s, we have kept it at bay here in New Zealand.
Many of those who survived are still here today struggling with the long-term effects of Post Polio Syndrome, this group, known as Polio New Zealand, is supported by the Duncan Foundation. Polio.org.nz.
24 October is World Polio Day, a global day to raise awareness and resources for the worldwide effort to eradicate polio. Communities, Rotarians, civil society, governments, and partners around the world are organizing events to mark the occasion and draw attention to the opportunity to rid the world of an infectious disease once and for all.
