Since 1972, the world-renowned Brodsky Quartet have pushed the musical boundaries of the string quartet in presentation and repertoire. Returning to New Zealand after their celebrated 2015 tour, this illustrious quartet offer two contrasting programmes that reflect the group’s unique versatility.
Rhythm & Texture profiles five composers who have consistently ignored musical barriers in favour of freedom of expression – the syncopated and vibrant colours of Mexico from Alvarez and Lavista, the neoclassical simplicity of Golijov’s Tenebrae, and one of Gershwin’s few chamber pieces Lullaby.
These contrast with a grand programme of fugues, where pathos, humour, gravity, exuberance and tragedy are enmeshed in the intricate weaving of counterpoint by Bach, Beethoven and Bartók.
