Summer Blues Fest

Summer Blues Fest

Our fantastic line up includes:
Laura Collins & the Back Porch Blues Band
Laura, who is up front from the very start, with high energy, cheek and vocal strength leads and celebrates her band – and gives them licence to shine. And shine they do, with Wayne Mason, master of boogie ‘burning it up’ on the keys and adding his iconic voice to the vocal mix.

Wayne Mason well-known singer songwriter, also one hell of a fine boogie piano player ‘firing it up’ on their behalf. Think Fats Domino, think Dr John, think Professor Longhair and you’ll be in the right honky tonk.

John O’Connor will be ‘eating it up’ on lead guitar, never self-indulgent – just soulful and astonishing. He’s played with everyone along the way, from BB King to Kiri Te Kanawa. The rhythm section brings a warm acoustic volume with George Barris on tasty upright bass and Peter Cogswell on the ‘back porch’ drums proving that you don’t need to be loud to groove.

This band is a combination of ‘old hands’ who have been making music a long time, absolutely revelling in the playing. A night out with Laura Collins and the Back Porch Blues Band is a joyful celebration of why we would ‘keep the music live’.

Kokomo - Hailing from Tauranga in the sunny Bay of Plenty, Kokomo (originally “KokomoBlues”) has become known as one of the country's leading blues & roots bands and has become renowned for dynamic live shows and smart distinctive songwriting.

Starting life in the early nineties as an acoustic guitar/harmonica/bass trio, the band has grown into a multi-instrumental ensemble that has toured extensively throughout New Zealand, performing at the country’s major rock, blues, jazz and folk festivals. Between touring the band has released ten albums and a live concert DVD. The first two were collections of traditional blues, while subsequent albums predominantly feature the band’s own songs.

The Flaming Mudcats
“Blues sunny side up, easy over, spicy or funky….it’s all on the menu with these guys.”

Now regarded among the country’s premier blues acts, The Flaming Mudcats have taken their show throughout NZ and performed in Australia, Pacific Islands and the USA.

This high energy harmonica and guitar four-piece, blend their sets with original material and covers drawn from their eclectic influences. Killer grooves, blazing licks and harp wizardry… butt shakers to soulful grinders are what you get.

The band is fronted by Craig Bracken, on vocals and harp, Doug Bygrave on guitar along with Johnny Yu on bass and Ian Thomson on drums.

Brilleaux
Brilleaux was formed specifically to play a variation of up-tempo British Rhythm & Blues not common on the music scene in the southern hemisphere, most blues bands opting to play the more classic Texas or Chicago style blues. The name Brilleaux was chosen as a tribute to the late Dr Feelgood vocalist Lee Brilleaux.

Brilleaux play hard, driving, fast and tough R&B. No slow renditions of old blues classics here - just energetic, sweaty rock n roll with screaming harmonica. Brilleaux has toured the UK 4 times and appeared at festivals in the England, Wales, Italy and Samoa.
