A very scenic  self guided cycle and featuring some of the regions favourite wineries, this is a truly great day out!

Your adventure starts with the wineries of Black Barn, Te Mata Estate and Akarangi in Havelock North where the wine tasting starts early!  With your first two winery visits under your belt we also highly recommend a visit to the Chalk and Cheese Cafe and Origin Earth sample room to savour some of the best cheeses you’ll ever taste before departing Havelock North.

From here you enjoy a 16km cycle on the limestone cycle trail of the landscapes ride, following the Tuki Tuki River, to the coastal communities of Haumoana and Te Awanga.  The views are stunning as you cycle the raised stop-bank trail and look out over orchards, vineyards, corn fields and farmland.

Reaching the coast you’ll be ready to taste some more fine wine at Beach House (summer weekends only), Elephant Hill, Clearview Estate and Te Awanga Estate (summer only).  If lunch at either Clearview Estate or Elephant Hill is on your ‘wish-list’ we strongly recommend pre-booking to avoid disappointment and we are happy to assist with reservations.

NB:  Most wineries charge for tastings which is payable direct.

Opening hours at wineries vary and some wineries are closed over winter months. Please check at the time of booking the number of wineries you should expect to find open.  Wherever possible Takaro Trails will advise of closures due to private functions however we cannot be held responsible for closures we have not been advised of.  Transport is from/to the Napier or Hastings i-Sites or central accommodation only.

COSTS PER PERSON:  $90.00 per adult $60.00 per child

Cost includes:  Bike, pannier & helmet hire, water bottle, route instructions & trail map, wine pick up service and  return transport from Napier or Hastings i-sites or accommodation. (Min 2 people per booking).

Your cycle  self guided tour starts at the Takaro Trails base in the historic port village of Ahuriri, Napier.  From here you cycle the short distance to the National Tobacco Building, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings with its distinctive Art Deco style.  This building is now home to the Tony Bish Urban Winery and we recommend you make a visit to see the barrel room, sample his excellent Chardonnay and learn about his unique ‘Golden Egg’ wine making process.

Joining the cycle trail you then make your way past fishing boats and old port warehouses to the Ahuriri Estuary.  The trail meanders for approx.. 10kms through this low-lying wetlands area, home to many species of wading birds and other wildlife.  As you cycle along it is sobering to reflect that prior to the 1931 earthquake this area was all a vast tidal inlet before the land lifted 1.8m in the mighty shake.

On reaching the suburb of Taradale you leave the estuary behind and cycle approx. 1km to the acclaimed wineries of the Mission Estate and Church Rd where you can visit their cellar doors and try the wines.  The final 6kms of your ride loops back through sheep farming country to complete the circuit back to Ahuriri.

COST:  $45.00 per adult and $30.00 per child

Cost includes: Bike, pannier & helmet hire, water bottle, route instructions & trail map and back  up support if required.

Your sunset cycling adventure starts at the Takaro Trails base in the historic port village of Ahuriri, Napier.  You will be set up on your comfortable, hybrid style bike and be given a safety briefing by your guide before cycling the short distance to the National Tobacco Building, one of New Zealand’s most photographed buildings with its distinctive Art Deco style.  This building is now home to the Tony Bish Urban Winery and we make a visit to sample his excellent Chardonnay and learn about his unique ‘Golden Egg’ wine making process.

Joining the cycle trail we make our way past fishing boats and old port warehouses to the Ahuriri Estuary.  The trail then meanders for approximately 10kms through this low-lying wetlands area, home to many species of wading birds and other wildlife.  As we make our way it is sobering to reflect that prior to the 1931 earthquake this area was all a vast tidal inlet before the land lifted 1.8m in the mighty shake.  Leaving the estuary behind we continue a further 5kms through sheep farming country before looping back around to complete our circuit back to Ahuriri.

Our tour ends with a well-deserved drink on the deck of a waterside bar where we can enjoy views of the sun setting over the water before returning to Takaro Trails.
